Classification: Regular, Full-time, 40 hours/week

Schedule: Monday-Friday (clinic hours are 8:00am - 6:30pm)

Location: Onsite (Valley Center, CA)

Pay range: $157,600 to $177,052 annually, DOE

SUMMARY:

The Dental Director is responsible for providing clinical leadership, fostering superior quality patient care, developing dental strategic goals and direction, and providing for the recruitment and retention of the dental staff at IHC. Oversees the day-to-day operations of the dental department, implementing programmatic and administrative policies and procedures. Serves as a working Dentist maintaining a patient case load and delivers effective and efficient patient care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

CLINICAL FUNCTIONS

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Provide routine dental care to all eligible patients as outlined by the IHC eligibility grid. Services include general operative procedures, prosthodontics, removable prosthetics, endodontic, oral surgery, and preventive services. Administers anesthetic for dental procedures. Provides hands on dental care as scheduled each week (1.2 visits per clinical hour).

2. Responsible for diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and malformations of the oral cavity and surrounding tissues.

3. Oral manifestations of systemic diseases will be treated in conjunction with appropriate consultation and referral to patient's physician.

4. Provides timely emergency treatment for all patients according to the dental emergency treatment protocol.

5. Keeps accurate and complete patient and records.

6. Coordinates all specialty dental programs in conjunction with specialty providers.

7. Educates patients and the community about oral health related conditions and the prevention of oral health related disease.

ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS

1. Holds direct responsibility for all dental staff, to include orientation, development, clinical supervision, evaluation, quality oversight, disciplinary action, and participation in recruitment and hiring processes.

2. Researches, develops, and implements dental policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with applicable regulations and clinical standards of care. Presents all policies and revisions to the Board of Directors for approval.

3. Plans, administers, and implements the delivery of services provided by the dental department. Communicates, oversees, and maintains patient centered dental home initiatives.

4. Collaborates with other IHC departments to ensure seamless operation of clinic programs and services: staffing and patient visit ratios, scheduling, analysis of dental programs/services, and advises in facilities and equipment purchases and repairs.

5. Establishes department work schedules in accordance with productivity standards. Assigns and monitors work of subordinate employees. Schedules and monitors contract dental staff.

6. Reviews and recommends clinical privileging for dental staff in collaboration with the CMO and HR department.

7. Observes and assists staff members at work to ensure safe and ethical practices and to solve problems and demonstrate appropriate techniques. Engages case consultations.

8. Implements and coordinates peer review for all dental staff in accordance with applicable accreditation standards.

9. Serves as the dental lead on the infection control committee. Engages committee assignments and participates in the delivery of ongoing training and education for all IHC departments.

10. Confers with the CFO to submit budget and statistical reports used to justify expenditures for equipment, supplies, and personnel.

11. Investigates and resolves patient grievances related to dental care and service delivery.

12. Leads and maintains an effective quality improvement/quality assurance program. Presents QI projects and outcomes to target audiences as directed by the CEO.

13. Participates in the preparation of grant applications, monitors grant goals and objectives, and completes grant reporting.

14. Implements and directs department emergency operation plans as necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise the senior-level staff to include front-line supervisors, dentists, dental specialists to include anesthesiologists, and hygienists. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the dental department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

· DMD or DDS degree from an accredited dental school

· Five (5) years' experience as a dentist in an outpatient setting preferred. Experience in a community health center setting is preferred.

· Three (3) years administrative, management and budget development experience preferred.

Certificates, Licenses and Regulations

· Must have a current California dental license, DEA license, and radiation certification.

· A valid California driver's license and a good driving record will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

· Current CPR certification or attain within 6 months of hire.

· Applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam, tuberculin skin test or x-ray and urine drug screen test to include marijuana. Health must be adequate to perform all duties of the position.

· Applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination.

· Must pass criminal background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Must have a mastery of interpersonal skills and possess the ability to interpret complex medical data.

· This role requires creativity and high energy along with strong public relations abilities, professionalism, a positive attitude, and motivation skills.

· Thorough knowledge of principles of modern dental practices to public services; structure and functions of public health organizations; and current social and economic problems pertaining to Native Americans.

· General knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to public health.

· Ability to plan, supervise, and execute a local health program.

· Establish and maintain effective working relationships; coordinate activities among public, public, private, and professional groups; express ideas clearly and concisely; address audiences effectively; and exercise balanced judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Must be proficient in the following:

  • Productivity Software: Microsoft Office 365; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email & Calendar Management (outlook), Teams (video conferencing and meetings), and Share Point.

· Electronic health records software (NextGen/QSI preferred).
